Stokes Open to White-Ball Cricket Comeback, Recovers from Injury
Despite stepping away from ODIs, the England star remains positive about returning, should the team need him.
England Test captain Ben Stokes has signaled his readiness to return to limited-overs cricket after recovering from knee surgery.
Although Stokes retired from one-day internationals following last year’s 50-over World Cup, he has hinted at the possibility of a comeback.
In a recent Sky Sports interview, the all-rounder expressed his openness to resuming his white-ball career, if the opportunity presents itself. “If I get the call asking, ‘Do you want to play?’ my answer will definitely be ‘yes’,” said the 33-year-old.
Stokes, who had opted out of England’s T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year, spoke highly of the nation’s evolving white-ball squad and praised emerging talents like Jacob Bethell, whom he described as a future star. Stokes has been a key figure in England’s previous victories, having played crucial roles in both the 2019 50-over World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup finals.
While satisfied with his accomplishments in limited-overs cricket, Stokes remains open to a return, though he also stressed he would be happy to see others succeed in his absence.
Stokes is currently recovering from a hamstring injury sustained while playing for the Northern Superchargers, which caused him to miss England’s recent Test series victory against Sri Lanka. He is set to undergo a scan to assess his fitness ahead of England’s upcoming Test tour of Pakistan next month.
Although optimistic about his progress, Stokes was cautious about his readiness to bowl again. “Rehab has gone well, but there’s more than just my hamstring that needs to be fully ready for bowling,” he noted.
As England’s cricket team continues to develop, the potential return of Stokes adds an exciting prospect to their evolving lineup.
