IHC Informed: No Intentions to Pursue Military Trial Against Imran Khan

Petition Dismissed Amid Speculation of Military Trial Over May 9 Riots Linked to Vandalism of Military Installations

The Islamabad High Court has dismissed a petition from PTI Chairman Imran Khan aimed at preventing his potential detention and trial by the military.

Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb presided over the hearing, during which the Additional Attorney General informed the court that the federal government has not yet made a decision regarding a military trial for the former PTI leader.

Additional Attorney General Manzoor Iqbal Dogal, along with a representative from the Ministry of Defense, appeared in court. The Additional Attorney General clarified that if a military trial is decided, the process will be conducted in accordance with Rule 549.

In response to the federal government’s statement, the court dismissed Imran Khan’s petition.

Khan had filed the petition to challenge the possibility of facing a military trial in connection with the May 9 incidents, during which military installations were vandalized following his arrest on corruption charges in 2023.

The petition was triggered by remarks from government officials, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, which led to speculation about Khan’s potential military trial for his alleged role in the May 9 riots.

Notably, in July 2023, a Lahore anti-terrorism court issued a four-page verdict stating that there was sufficient evidence linking Khan to the May 9 events.
