Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Calls for Major Reforms Amid Government Critique
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Criticizes Government’s Approach to Constitutional Reforms and Public Gatherings
On Wednesday, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, convener of the Awam Pakistan Party (AAP), criticized the current government’s approach to constitutional reforms. The former Prime Minister expressed concern over the government’s response to public gatherings and legislative needs.
Abbasi commented, “The government seems to be intimidated, even though there is a clear need for new legislation. Closing off routes after permitting public demonstrations does not reflect democratic values.”
He added, “There are already numerous laws in place to regulate rallies. The constitution permits public gatherings, yet the entire city of Islamabad was shut down to control these events,” referencing his experience as a former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) member.
Addressing remarks made by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Abbasi criticized the use of inappropriate language during public gatherings.
Calls for Major Reforms
Earlier on Tuesday, Abbasi emphasized the urgent need for significant reforms in the country. Speaking on Samaa TV, he noted, “The country is under pressure on multiple fronts. I have previously warned that elections could exacerbate the situation.”
He expressed frustration over the delay in reaching an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stating, “The country’s economic and political pressures are increasing, and there seems to be a lack of effective solutions or strategies.”
Abbasi concluded with a call for addressing the nation’s problems, saying, “I am eager to see a resolution to the issues facing our country.”
