US State Department Stresses Imran Khan’s Detention as Pakistan’s Internal Matter

Calls for Respect of Human Rights Amid Concerns Over Pakistan’s Democratic Processes

WASHINGTON – US State Department principal deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel while briefing the newsmen in Washington on Tuesday said that Imran Khan’s detention is Pakistan’s internal matter.

When asked about the US House of Representatives resolution asking for a thorough and independent investigation into interference claims in Pakistan’s 2024 elections, Vedant Patel said that in the United States of America and our democratic system, Congress is a separate but coequal branch of government.

Vedant Patel said that we have consistently and privately and publicly urged Pakistan to respect the rights of its people in line with its constitution and international commitments.

He said that we urge the Government of Pakistan to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of expression, freedom of association, peaceful assembly, and the freedom of religion as well.

Responding to a question on Pakistan-India relations, Vedant Patel said said that the US welcomes any countries making more positive relations with their neighbours.

“But ultimately this is between India and Pakistan broadly, of course, we welcome any countries making more positive relations with their neighbours. But as it relates to this specifically, I just don’t have anything to offer,” he said.

Pakistan Rejects UN Working Group’s Criticism on Imran Khan’s Arrest

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar has dismissed international criticism from the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention regarding the arrest and pending cases of PTI founder Imran Khan.

In response to the UN’s stance, Minister Tarar emphasized Pakistan’s sovereignty and adherence to constitutional and legal processes. He underscored that Imran Khan, currently in jail, is subject to the country’s laws and enjoys all rights afforded by the constitution and international norms.

Tarar defended the legal proceedings against Imran Khan, citing multiple cases where relief has been granted, indicating a transparent and fair judicial system at work.

The Geneva-based UN Working Group had earlier criticized Imran Khan’s arrest and trial as unjustified, calling for his immediate release.

The contrasting views between international scrutiny and national sovereignty highlight ongoing debates over legal proceedings and human rights in Pakistan.

This development underscores the complexities of balancing domestic legal frameworks with international human rights standards.
