Young Girl Dies from Rabies in Karachi

Karachi Reports Third Rabies Death Amid Rising Dogbites

KARACHI: (Web Desk) – A young girl suffering from rabies passed away at Indus Hospital, hospital officials reported Tuesday. The girl had been brought to the hospital Monday night after being bitten by a stray dog two months earlier but had not received the life-saving vaccine, according to Dr. Aftab Gohar, in charge of the hospital’s Rabies Clinic.

This marks the third death from dogbite-related rabies in the city this year. Another case was reported on February 23, 2026, when a 75-year-old Lyari resident was admitted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre exhibiting advanced rabies symptoms, including hydrophobia and photophobia. The patient is under medical supervision and receiving palliative care.

Health authorities confirmed that this is the fifth rabies case reported in Sindh so far this year, reflecting a troubling increase in dogbite incidents across the province. Experts stress that rabies deaths are preventable with prompt post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which can stop the virus from reaching the central nervous system.
