Wife: The Garment of Love or a Victim of Tyranny?
Written by: Asif, Islamabad
It is said that marriage is a sacred bond that teaches two strangers how to walk through life together. The Quran beautifully describes the relationship between husband and wife as being “garments” for one another. This profound metaphor signifies protection, dignity, and comfort. However, in our society, many men fail to honor this bond, treating their “garments” not as a source of love and respect but as objects to tear apart and degrade.
These ignorant men, who consider themselves wise, channel their frustrations, failures, and anger toward their wives, treating them as if they were nothing more than bought slaves rather than living, breathing humans.
The Wife: The Nurturer of Love and the Heart of the Home
A wife is the cornerstone of a home, the source of love, sacrifice, and relentless effort that keeps the family united. She is a sanctuary of comfort for her husband and a nurturing figure for her children. A wife hides her pain to become a balm for her husband, sacrificing her desires for his happiness. Yet, how is it fair that the very man who should protect and cherish her becomes the source of her suffering, subjecting her to abuse, insults, and humiliation?
Poverty and the Husband’s Responsibility
In our society, a man is seen as the head of the family, bearing the primary responsibility to provide for and protect his household from poverty and hardship. However, when a man fails in this duty, rather than striving to improve, he blames his wife for his shortcomings.
In such circumstances, a man must see his wife as a source of strength and support, working together to overcome challenges. But ignorant men, burdened by their failures, take out their frustrations on their wives as though they are emotionless machines.
The Consequences of Abuse and the Teachings of the Prophet ﷺ
Raising a hand against one’s wife, for any reason, is not only a moral crime but also contrary to Islamic teachings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The best among you are those who are best to their wives.”
These words establish the standard for how a man should treat his wife. Yet, ignorant men ignore these teachings, turning their homes into battlegrounds. Abuse not only destroys a woman’s life but also affects the entire household. Children raised in such an environment grow up emotionally unstable, carrying scars that impact them for the rest of their lives.
A Relationship Built on Love and Respect
A wife is neither a robot nor a slave; she is a sensitive human being who seeks only love and respect. If a husband responds to his wife’s anger or emotional moments with kindness and affection, she will go to any lengths to reciprocate that love.
A husband who honors his wife becomes a role model not only for her but also for their children. His love and compassion leave a legacy that spans generations.
Changing the Mindset, Changing the Behavior
It is time to challenge the mindset that gives men the right to oppress their wives. Men must understand that their wives are their most precious companions, sent by Allah as a source of comfort and love.
A wife is the garment of your life. Treat her with respect, drape her in love. This is the true test of your humanity and manhood.
Remember, love and respect are the pillars that build a strong and happy family. If we embrace these principles, our society can transform into a better and more peaceful place.
