West Bengal Passes Death Penalty Law for Rapists Amid Protests

New Rape Law Enhances Punishments in West Bengal, But Criminal Code Remains Uniform Across India

West Bengal-West Bengal Passes Death Penalty Law for Rapists Amid Protests. Protests have escalated following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, prompting the Indian state to pass a law that mandates the death penalty for rapists.

Demonstrations have surged in West Bengal after the gruesome discovery of a 31-year-old trainee doctor’s body at a government hospital in Kolkata, with protesters calling for accountability from the local authorities.

The state assembly has approved a new law that imposes the death penalty on those convicted of rape. However, it still needs the president’s approval to become effective.

The case involving the alleged rape of a ‘foreign woman’ in Islamabad has taken a dramatic turn.

While the new legislation in West Bengal is a significant move, it is largely symbolic, as India’s criminal code is uniformly enforced throughout the country.

Presidential approval could make this legislation a unique exception, enabling it to become state law.

The new law enhances the punishment for rape, raising the minimum sentence from 10 years to life imprisonment or even the death penalty. In the wake of the doctor’s murder, doctors initially went on strike, and thousands of citizens across India joined in protests. However, many doctors have since resumed their duties.
