WAPDA Chairman Reviews Tarbela Hydropower Expansion and Progress Works Today
Officials Push Timely Completion of Tarbela Energy Expansion Projects
Islamabad: (Web Desk) Water and Power Development Authority Chairman Lt Gen (r) Muhammad Saeed visited Tarbela Dam on Monday to assess the ongoing hydropower expansion projects. He was accompanied by Indus River System Authority Chairman Amjad Saeed, and both officials emphasized the importance of completing the projects on schedule to strengthen electricity production and improve water management for agriculture.
During the visit, the chairman inspected construction activities at the Tarbela Fifth Extension Hydropower Project and received detailed updates from engineers regarding progress on various components. He appreciated the efforts of the project team and instructed them to maintain momentum and ensure timely completion.

Officials stated that the Fifth Extension Project will contribute 1,530 megawatts of electricity to the national grid and is financed through support from the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Once completed, Tarbela’s total electricity generation capacity will rise to 6,418 megawatts.
The chairman also reviewed the Tarbela Fourth Extension Hydropower Project, including inspection of the Low Level Outlet system used for seasonal water distribution in line with IRSA allocations during the Kharif period. He visited the machine hall and control room, where officials briefed him that the project has been operational since March 2018 and has already supplied over 33 billion electricity units to the national grid.
Later, he was briefed on operational and maintenance matters of both Tarbela and Khanpur Dam.
