Usama Mir Only Pakistani Pick in 2024-25 BBL Draft

Melbourne Stars Retain Pakistani Cricketer for the Season

Sports-Leg-spinner Usama Mir has emerged as the only Pakistani cricketer selected in the 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) drafts, securing a spot with the Melbourne Stars for the upcoming season.

Out of 69 male and 11 female Pakistani cricketers available for selection, Mir was the sole player chosen for the Australian T20 competition.

Mir was picked by the Melbourne Stars in the third round of the draft, continuing his stint with the franchise after playing for them in the 2023-24 season.

The 2024-25 BBL season is set to start on December 15, 2024, and run until January 27, 2025. This year’s draft strategy seemed to favor players who could commit to the entire season without the complications of obtaining No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from their respective national boards.

Pakistani players often face challenges in participating in global leagues due to uncertainties surrounding NOCs, which are required for their national team commitments.

Among the notable selections in the first round of the draft were Ben Duckett (Melbourne Stars), James Vince (Sydney Sixers), Laurie Evans (Melbourne Renegades), and Lockie Ferguson (Sydney Thunder). The second round saw players like Tom Curran (Melbourne Stars) and Chris Jordan (Hobart Hurricanes) being chosen. Usama Mir was picked in the third round, joining players such as Fabian Allen (Adelaide Strikers) and Sherfane Rutherford (Sydney Thunder).
