US Sanctions Cuba: Trump Targets Diaz-Canel Family

US vs CUBA – (Web Desk) – The United States has announced new US sanctions on Cuba, directly targeting President Miguel Diaz-Canel, his wife, and stepson. Members of the powerful Castro family were also hit, including a son and grandson of former President Raul Castro.

The US Treasury added the Cuban Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and several other government-linked bodies to its sanctions list. This is the latest move in a much wider pressure campaign that President Donald Trump has been running against Havana.

Trump has already cut off Cuba’s fuel supplies since January. He has also threatened even stronger action, suggesting the island could be next in line after Venezuela and Iran.

“We’ll just make a little brief stop over,” Trump told reporters, hinting at Cuba after discussing Iran.

The fuel cutoff has hit ordinary Cubans the hardest. The island is now suffering power outages of up to 22 hours a day. Without diesel for backup generators, people are also running short on clean tap water.

Transport has nearly ground to a halt. Food and medicine are in short supply. Cuba is now heavily dependent on aid shipments coming in from Mexico and China.

A United Nations representative on the island issued a stark warning Thursday. With hurricane season now beginning, the combination of the humanitarian emergency and storm risk creates what officials called an “explosive cocktail.”

President Diaz-Canel hit back sharply on social media platform X. He accused Trump of trying to create conflict between the two countries and vowed that Cuba would resist what he called “the imperialist onslaught.”

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez also responded firmly. He said the sanctions were “vile” but would only strengthen the unity of the Cuban people.

Trump, for his part, said he simply wanted Cuba to be a well-run country that could feed its citizens. He also mused openly about Cuba’s tourism potential, saying the island has “beautiful land” and could one day host world-class resorts.

Cuba has been living under a US trade embargo since 1962. These latest sanctions, however, mark one of the most aggressive escalations in decades.
