US Iran Tensions Rise Over Strait Escort Plan

TEHRAN: (Web Desk) – Iran warned on Monday that any attempt by the United States to intervene in the Strait of Hormuz would be seen as a violation of the ongoing Middle East ceasefire. This came after President Donald Trump announced that US forces would begin escorting ships through the restricted waterway.

Talks between Washington and Tehran have remained stalled since the ceasefire began on April 8. Iran’s control over the crucial strait—following joint US-Israeli strikes on Tehran—has become a central issue in the dispute.

Trump described the planned operation, called “Project Freedom,” as a humanitarian effort aimed at assisting ships and crews stranded in the area, many of whom are reportedly running short on essential supplies.

“We will do everything possible to guide ships and their crews safely out of the Strait,” Trump stated, adding that vessels are unwilling to return until conditions improve.

In response, a senior Iranian parliamentary official said any US involvement in the strait’s new maritime arrangements would breach the ceasefire agreement.

Iran’s blockade has significantly disrupted global supplies of oil, gas, and fertilizers, while the US has responded with restrictions on Iranian ports, escalating economic pressure.

Despite tensions, Trump claimed that ongoing discussions with Iran could still lead to a positive outcome, though he did not directly address Tehran’s proposed 14-point peace plan.

US Central Command revealed that the mission would involve advanced naval vessels, over 100 aircraft, unmanned systems, and around 15,000 personnel.

Reports suggest Iran has set a one-month deadline for negotiations to reopen the strait and end hostilities. Meanwhile, Iranian officials warned the US must choose between a failed military approach or accepting a negotiated settlement.

European nations have expressed concern over the prolonged closure of the strait, citing economic risks. Germany has urged Iran to reopen the route and abandon its nuclear ambitions as part of a diplomatic resolution.

Oil prices have surged roughly 50% compared to pre-conflict levels due to supply disruptions in the region.

Trump hinted at possible military action if US escort operations are obstructed, while US officials emphasized that economic sanctions are part of a broader strategy to pressure Iran.

Iranian military figures responded with strong rhetoric, warning of severe consequences if US forces escalate their involvement.
