U.S. Reaffirms Commitment to Human Rights on Global Stage

Washington, D.C. – On the occasion of Human Rights Day, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken reaffirmed America’s unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights around the world.

In a press statement released on December 10, Blinken highlighted that the United States was founded on the belief that all people are created equal and endowed with inalienable rights. He emphasized that these principles remain a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy, continuing to drive the nation’s advocacy for human dignity and equality worldwide.

“While the journey toward global human rights progress is far from complete, the United States stands firm in its resolve to uphold the ideals laid out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” said Blinken. “These principles are not just aspirational but universal, and we will continue to push for a world where every person’s freedom is respected and protected.”

The statement also underscored the ongoing global struggles faced by human rights defenders who, often at great personal risk, challenge repressive regimes that use the pretext of national security to justify human rights violations. Blinken praised these defenders for their resilience, courage, and leadership in the fight for freedom, pledging continued U.S. support.

“Human rights are not a luxury, nor should they ever be sacrificed for so-called security,” Blinken said. “True security can only be achieved when human rights are protected and promoted.”

The United States called for greater global unity in defending the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly 76 years ago. Blinken’s message resonated with a call for greater global cooperation to ensure that these rights are not only recognized but respected by every nation, for every person, everywhere.

As nations reflect on the significance of Human Rights Day, the U.S. remains steadfast in its commitment to advance global human rights and freedom for all.
