Washington/Islamabad: (Web Desk/Mudassar Iqbal) – US President Donald Trump on Friday praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Asim Munir following Iran’s decision to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump thanked Pakistan and described its leadership as “two fantastic people,” acknowledging Islamabad’s role in recent diplomatic developments in the region.
Pakistan-US relations have seen a notable improvement during 2025–2026, shifting from a period of limited engagement to a more pragmatic and strategic partnership. This change gained momentum after diplomatic interventions, including efforts linked to regional conflict management.

A key turning point came during the brief but intense Pakistan-India tensions in May 2025, where Pakistan’s handling of the situation drew international attention. Trump has repeatedly credited his administration with helping facilitate a ceasefire between the two countries, a claim that Islamabad has welcomed.
Cooperation between the two sides also expanded through counterterrorism engagement and high-level interactions, including a rare invitation extended to Field Marshal Asim Munir for official meetings in the United States.
Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Pakistan has also played a mediating role between Washington and Tehran. While initial talks did not produce a breakthrough, both sides have indicated willingness to continue negotiations.
Following continued diplomatic efforts, Iran announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, signaling a step toward de-escalation in a region critical to global energy supplies.
