Twitter Ban in Pakistan: Ministry of Interior Deems Platform a National Security Threat

The Ministry of Interior stated that the ban was necessary to uphold national security and dignity, given X’s consistent violation of Pakistani laws.

Karachi: In a recent development, the Ministry of Interior has submitted a report to the Sindh High Court, labeling social media platform Twitter (now rebranded as X) as a threat to national security, firmly stating that the platform cannot be reinstated in the country.

According to a private TV channel, the Ministry’s response emphasized its duty to protect the rights of Pakistani citizens. The ministry clarified that all legal requirements were met before imposing the ban on X. The Ministry of Interior asserted that the ban does not violate Article 19 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression, albeit with certain legal restrictions.

The Ministry highlighted that X has been a conduit for hateful content against national institutions. Despite repeated requests for compliance with local laws, X, being a foreign company, failed to adhere to these regulations. Consequently, the Ministry found no option but to impose a temporary shutdown of the platform on February 17. The report also mentioned that X had not signed any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pakistan.
