Torkham Border closed by Pakistan amid border tensions with Afghan Taliban

ISLAMABAD: The Torkham border crossing, a key gateway linking Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in Pakistan to Nangarhar province in Afghanistan, has remained shut over the weekend due to escalating tensions between the border forces of both countries.

International media reports indicate that Pakistan has restricted all movement in and out of the region near Torkham, which serves as one of the busiest ports of entry and a major transportation hub. As the crossing remains non-operational, Pakistan’s Foreign Office has not yet provided details about the official closure.

In a statement, the Afghan Taliban has advised nations to avoid using the Torkham route until further notice, noting that no official communication had been received from Pakistani authorities regarding the border shutdown.

The closure comes amidst heightened tensions due to cross-border attacks and a rising insurgency, which have caused significant strain between the two nations. This shutdown is expected to cause considerable disruptions to trade and daily travel across the border.

The latest closure follows ongoing hostilities between Pakistani border forces and Taliban fighters, particularly centered around the construction of security posts. Cross-border clashes have continued to strain relations since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021.
