Telegram Founder Pavel Durov Arrested in Paris Over Moderation Issues

Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, was arrested at Bourget airport near Paris on Saturday.

Pavel Durov, the Russian-French billionaire and Telegram founder, was arrested at Bourget airport near Paris on Saturday evening, according to TF1 TV and BFM TV. The arrest followed a warrant related to a French police investigation into Telegram’s lack of moderation, which allegedly facilitated criminal activity on the platform.

Durov, who was traveling on his private jet, may face indictment soon. The investigation highlights concerns about Telegram’s role as a major social media platform with nearly one billion users and its influence in Russia, Ukraine, and former Soviet republics.

Telegram, which Durov co-founded in 2013 and left Russia in 2014, has become a key source of unfiltered content about the Ukraine conflict and a haven for independent news in Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry is seeking clarification and urging Western NGOs to advocate for Durov’s release.

Durov, with an estimated net worth of $15.5 billion, has previously faced pressure from governments to restrict access to encrypted messages. His arrest has sparked criticism from Russian officials and calls for protests at French embassies globally.
