Syrian People Have Right to Decide Future Without Foreign Interference: FO

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reiterated its stance on Syria‘s sovereignty, emphasizing that the Syrian people have the right to determine their own future without foreign interference. The statement came from the Foreign Office spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, during a weekly press briefing on December 12, 2024, in response to recent developments in Syria.

Baloch expressed Pakistan’s deep concern over the escalating violence in Syria, particularly following the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by rebel forces. She stressed that Pakistan fully supports Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and has always advocated for a comprehensive solution to the crisis.

The spokesperson also voiced Pakistan’s concerns over the Israeli aggression in Syria, highlighting the illegal seizure of territory and widespread destruction. She condemned the violation of international law and reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for UN Security Council Resolution 497, which declared Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights null and void.

Regarding the safety of Pakistani nationals in Syria, Baloch confirmed that around 475 Pakistanis, including 250 zaireen, have crossed into Lebanon. Pakistan’s missions in Syria and Lebanon, in cooperation with the Lebanese government, have been actively facilitating their safe repatriation to Islamabad.

In addition, the spokesperson addressed the ongoing threat posed by terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan, stressing that the issue remains a priority in Pakistan’s discussions with Afghanistan. Baloch condemned the recent terror attack in Kabul and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to combating terrorism in all forms.

Pakistan’s continued engagement with international partners, including the United States, remains focused on addressing terrorism and transnational organized crime as key priorities.
