Switzerland Defeat Canada While Both Reach World Cup Knockouts
Historic Qualification Seals Memorable Night For Canada
Vancouver: (Web Desk) – Switzerland secured top spot in Group B of the FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Canada in Vancouver, while the co-hosts also celebrated a historic qualification for the knockout stage.
With both teams entering the match level at the top of the group, the winner was guaranteed first place and a potentially more favorable path in the Round of 32. Switzerland delivered when it mattered most, thanks to second-half goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi.
The victory lifted Switzerland to seven points from three matches, while Canada finished second with four points, enough to secure the nation’s first-ever qualification for the World Cup knockout rounds.
The opening half produced several opportunities for both sides. Switzerland came close through Breel Embolo, while Canada tested goalkeeper Gregor Kobel on multiple occasions but failed to break the deadlock.
The match came alive immediately after halftime when Vargas finished clinically at the back post following excellent work by Manzambi down the right flank. Switzerland doubled its advantage in the 57th minute as Manzambi capped an impressive performance by scoring his third goal of the tournament after capitalizing on a goalkeeping error.

Canada refused to give up and found a lifeline in the closing stages. Substitute Promise David converted a precise delivery from Nathan Saliba to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finish.
The late goal raised hopes of a dramatic equalizer that would have sent Canada through as group winners, but Switzerland held firm under pressure to secure all three points and finish atop the standings.
Despite the defeat, Canada achieved a significant milestone by reaching the knockout phase for the first time in its history. Prior to the 2026 tournament, the Canadians had never won a match at a World Cup finals, making their progress to the last 32 a landmark achievement for the national team.
Elsewhere in Group B, Bosnia and Herzegovina National Football Team defeated Qatar National Football Team 3-1 to finish third in the group and keep slim hopes of progression alive as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Switzerland will now face one of the top third-placed sides in the knockout rounds, while Canada prepares for a Round of 32 clash against the runner-up from Group A in Los Angeles.
