Supreme Court lifts stay on PIA privatization, dismisses case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court’s constitutional bench, led by Justice Ameenuddin, has lifted the stay order on the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), effectively dismissing the case. During the hearing, the Additional Attorney General informed the court that the Supreme Court had previously allowed PIA’s management to hire new professionals, but no new hires had been made during the privatization process.

The Attorney General also stated that the privatization commission would soon resume its efforts, and the ban on PIA’s flight operations had been lifted. Justice Ameenuddin commented that the privatization process might fetch a better price this time around.

Justice Jamal Mandokhel raised concerns about whether the government’s move to privatize PIA was in violation of the Supreme Court’s earlier order, which mandated that privatization be carried out with the court’s confidence. The court had previously directed that any privatization should be done with the court’s approval.

The Additional Attorney General clarified that a petition had been filed in the Supreme Court to seek approval for the privatization process. Justice Mandokhel affirmed that the court trusted the process, encouraging PIA to proceed with the privatization in an orderly manner.

The constitutional bench subsequently concluded the case, allowing the privatization process to continue.
