Stokes, Atkinson Investigated After Nightclub Incident

LONDON: (Web Desk) – The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has launched an investigation into captain Ben Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson following an alleged breach of team rules after the first Test against New Zealand.

In a statement released on Monday, the ECB confirmed that both players were present at a nightclub during the early hours of Monday morning when an incident reportedly occurred. The governing body said it is gathering further information before deciding on any potential action.

The investigation marks the latest off-field issue involving England’s men’s cricket team, which has faced scrutiny over player behavior in recent months. Concerns about a drinking culture emerged during England’s difficult Ashes tour of Australia earlier this year, where the team suffered a 4-1 series defeat.

“The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men’s Test against New Zealand,” the board said. It added that an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made once more details are established.

The matter has also been referred to the Cricket Regulator, with the ECB promising further updates when appropriate.

The controversy follows an earlier incident involving England white-ball captain Harry Brook, who was reportedly punched by a nightclub bouncer in Wellington on the eve of a one-day international against New Zealand. In response, England introduced a midnight curfew for players and support staff.

According to reports, the curfew remained in effect despite the completion of the first Test, and the current investigation may involve issues beyond simply breaking curfew regulations.

England entered the controversy on the back of an impressive performance on the field. The team secured a commanding 115-run victory over New Zealand at Lord’s Cricket Ground, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and bouncing back strongly from their disappointing Ashes campaign.
