Starship Set for First Orbital Flight Next Week

WASHINGTON:(News Desk) –  SpaceX has announced plans to launch its Starship rocket into orbit next week, marking a significant step in the company’s long-term ambitions to reach the Moon and Mars.

The Elon Musk-led space company said Starship’s first orbital flight is scheduled for Tuesday, with liftoff planned from Texas at 7:15 a.m. local time (1215 GMT).

The upcoming mission will be Starship’s 14th test flight and will also attempt to deploy 26 Starlink satellites into orbit.

SpaceX described the mission as the beginning of an “exciting new phase” for Starship, the company’s largest and most powerful rocket. The company said previous test flights had deliberately followed passively safe suborbital trajectories to maximise public safety.

“With the move to orbit, the next phase of developing Starship to be fully and rapidly reusable can begin,” SpaceX said on its website.

Several previous Starship test flights ended unsuccessfully, with rockets breaking apart or exploding during flight. Musk has referred to such incidents as “rapid unscheduled disassembly.”

The most recent test flight in July was largely successful and marked the first such mission since SpaceX completed what was described as the largest initial public offering in history.

Despite the planned orbital flight, Starship still needs to demonstrate several key capabilities, including in-space refuelling, before it can support commercial missions or eventually be used for crewed journeys to the Moon and Mars.
