Høybråten’s ‘Standing in the Storm’ Celebrates Principled Leadership
Oslo – The launch of Dagfinn Høybråten’s new book, “Stå i stormen” (Standing in the Storm), was held last night in Oslo, celebrating a career of principled leadership and highlighting the importance of reconciliation. The event was attended by Ali Shahnawaz Khan, who is featured in a chapter of the book focusing on his reconciliation efforts.
Høybråten, a prominent figure in Norwegian politics and humanitarian work, has served as Minister of Health, Parliamentary Leader of the Christian Democratic Party, Secretary General of Norwegian Church Aid, and Chair of GAVI. His book reflects on leading with integrity during challenging times.
Khan, whose work in fostering dialogue during the 2006 cartoon crisis is revisited in the book, played a key role in mediating between the Islamic Council of Norway and editor Vebjørn Selbekk. His initiative, aimed at promoting peace through mutual respect, was supported by Høybråten and subsequently by then Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Khan highlighted Stoltenberg’s calm and inclusive approach during the crisis, which garnered international recognition. He noted the continued leadership of those involved, including Jonas Gahr Støre, now Norway’s Prime Minister, and Jens Stoltenberg, former Secretary General of NATO and current Minister of Finance.
Khan shared a personal anecdote from the time, recalling a conversation with former U.S. Ambassador to Norway, Benson K. Whitney, who praised his efforts in promoting peace and reconciliation between Norway and the Muslim world.
Khan emphasized that his work, including decades of advocacy for a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, is driven by a commitment to people and justice, rather than personal recognition.
“Stå i stormen” is described as a timely reminder of the importance of leadership grounded in truth, humility, and moral strength, particularly during times of adversity. Høybråten’s message underscores the value of standing with others, especially during storms.
