SpaceX Eyes Major Expansion Into Mobile Services
Starlink Reportedly Preparing Entry Into US Mobile Market
WASHINGTON: (Web Desk) – SpaceX is reportedly planning a significant expansion of its Starlink business that could position the company as a direct competitor to some of the largest wireless carriers in the United States.
According to US media reports, the company is exploring the launch of a Starlink-branded mobile service for consumers while simultaneously developing its own terrestrial mobile network across the country. The plans were reportedly outlined by SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell during a recent investor roadshow ahead of a potential initial public offering (IPO).
If implemented, the move would place Starlink in direct competition with major telecom providers including Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.
Currently, SpaceX offers direct-to-cell satellite connectivity through its partnership with T-Mobile, enabling mobile users to stay connected in areas without traditional cellular coverage. However, introducing a standalone Starlink mobile service would represent a major step beyond the company’s existing satellite internet operations.
Elon Musk becomes first trillionaire after sharp rise in wealth
The reported expansion follows SpaceX’s acquisition of EchoStar’s wireless spectrum licenses in transactions valued at nearly $20 billion. The additional spectrum is expected to support the development of a low-cost direct-to-cell satellite network capable of expanding wireless connectivity across the United States.
Industry analysts believe the proposed expansion could reshape the US telecommunications sector. Analysts at Oppenheimer recently noted that Starlink’s rapid subscriber growth positions SpaceX as a potential disruptor in the country’s $1.6 trillion communications industry.
Starlink has emerged as one of SpaceX’s fastest-growing businesses, serving more than 10 million subscribers worldwide. Beyond providing satellite internet, the company has also expanded its emergency response efforts, including offering free connectivity to earthquake-affected communities in Venezuela and deploying satellite terminals to restore communications in disaster-hit areas.
While the plans have not yet been officially announced by SpaceX, the reported strategy highlights the company’s ambitions to broaden its presence in the global telecommunications market.
