South Africa wins second Super Over against Afghanistan

De Kock, van der Dussen shine in victory

Ahmedabad: (Web Desk) –  In a thrilling ICC T20 World Cup Group D encounter, South Africa defeated Afghanistan in the second Super Over after the first Super Over ended in a tie.

In the first Super Over, Afghanistan batted first and scored 17 runs, and South Africa matched them with 17 runs as well. This led to a second Super Over, where South Africa set a target of 23 runs. Afghanistan managed 19 runs in response, handing the Proteas a 4-run victory.

The match, played in Ahmedabad, India, saw Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan win the toss and field first, inviting South Africa to bat. South Africa’s openers Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock started the innings but Markram was caught out by Fazal Haq Farooqi at 12 runs.

ICC Issues Key Statement on Pakistan–India Match

Following the early wicket, de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen steadied the innings with responsible batting, both scoring fifties in the same over—de Kock 59 and van der Dussen 61. David Miller contributed 20 runs, while Dewald Brevis added 23. For Afghanistan, Azmatullah Omarzai took 3 wickets and Rashid Khan took 2.

Afghanistan’s innings began with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. At one point, Afghanistan looked in control, but a collapse saw 5 wickets fall in 13 balls, and the team was all out for 187 in 20 overs. Gurbaz starred with a blistering 87 off 42 balls, including 7 sixes and 4 fours, while Azmatullah Omarzai scored 22 and Rashid Khan 20. Lungi Ngidi took 3 wickets for South Africa.

Earlier, Afghanistan lost their opening match to New Zealand, while South Africa defeated Canada by 57 runs in their first game.

This victory gives South Africa momentum as the Group D battles intensify.
