South Africa Dominates Champions Trophy with 107-run Victory Over Afghanistan
KARACHI: In the third match of the ICC Champions Trophy, South Africa defeated Afghanistan by 107 runs.
In Group B’s opening match, Afghanistan, chasing a daunting target of 316 runs, was bowled out for 208 runs.
South Africa’s Innings:
The match, held at Karachi’s National Stadium, saw South Africa winning the toss and opting to bat first. The South African team faced an early setback as they lost their first wicket at 28 runs, with Tony de Zorzi departing for 11 runs. However, Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma steadied the innings, both scoring half-centuries.
Bavuma was dismissed for 58 runs, caught off the bowling of Mohammad Nabi, with the score at 157. Following his departure, Rassie van der Dussen played a brilliant knock, scoring 103 runs before being dismissed. Both Aiden Markram and Wayne Parnell contributed with 52 runs each before being sent back to the pavilion.
South Africa posted a total of 315 runs for 6 wickets in their 50 overs. Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi claimed two wickets, while Fazal Haq Farooqi, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Noor Ahmad took one wicket each.
Afghanistan’s Innings:
In reply to South Africa’s challenging total, Afghanistan’s batting lineup faltered early. The team lost four wickets for just 50 runs. Rahmat Shah stood firm at one end, consistently accumulating runs, but wickets continued to fall at the other end.

Afghanistan’s innings crumbled, and they were bowled out for 208 runs in the 44th over, losing the match by 107 runs. Rahmat Shah was the top scorer for Afghanistan, contributing 90 runs.
For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada was the standout bowler, taking three wickets. Lungi Ngidi and Wiaan Mulder picked up two wickets each, while Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj claimed one wicket each.
