Sindh Announces Shab-e-Barat Holiday for Educational Institutions

Karachi – The Sindh Education Department has officially declared a holiday on Friday, February 14, for all public and private educational institutions in observance of Shab-e-Barat.

Shab-e-Barat, the revered night between the 14th and 15th of Shaban, holds deep spiritual significance for Muslims as they seek forgiveness and blessings from Allah. The holiday will allow students and faculty members to observe the occasion with religious devotion.

According to the official notification, the closure applies to all government and private schools and colleges across the province. However, the federal government has not included Shab-e-Barat in the list of public holidays for 2025, instead categorizing it as an optional holiday.

Public Holiday Schedule for 2025

The federal government has released the following schedule for national holidays:

  • Kashmir Day – February 5
  • Pakistan Day – March 23
  • Eid-ul-Fitr – March 30, 31 & April 1
  • Labour Day – May 1
  • Youm-e-Takbeer – May 28
  • Eid-ul-Azha – June 7, 8 & 9
  • Ashura (9th & 10th Muharram) – July 5 & 6
  • Independence Day – August 14
  • Eid Milad-un-Nabi – September 5 & 6
  • Iqbal Day – November 9

No other province or federal authority has yet announced a Shab-e-Barat holiday for 2025.

Shab-e-Barat is observed across Pakistan with special prayers, mosque gatherings, and visits to graveyards to honor deceased loved ones. Muslims believe it is a night of divine mercy and forgiveness, marking a spiritual preparation before the holy month of Ramzan.
