Shubman Gill Appointed India’s New ODI Captain, Replaced Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, 38, who led India in ODIs since December 2021, will continue as a player in the squad.

MUMBAI, Oct 5, 2025 — Shubman Gill has officially been named India’s new ODI captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma ahead of the upcoming three-match series in Australia starting October 19. The move signals a generational shift in Indian cricket as selectors look to build towards the 2027 ICC World Cup.

The announcement was made after the selection committee, headed by former fast bowler Ajit Agarkar, met in Ahmedabad — a day after India’s emphatic Test win over the West Indies by an innings and 140 runs. According to sources, the decision was taken in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

Gill, 26, now holds official leadership roles across formats — serving as the Test and ODI captain, and vice-captain in T20Is. His elevation in ODIs follows his appointment as Test captain earlier this year, after Rohit Sharma retired from the longest format. Gill impressed in his debut Test series as captain, guiding India to a 2-2 draw in England while finishing as the highest run-scorer with 754 runs at an average of 75.40.

Rohit Sharma, 38, who led India in ODIs since December 2021, will continue as a player in the squad. He is joined by veteran batter Virat Kohli, marking their first international appearances since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in March. Both have also retired from Tests and T20Is.

During his tenure as ODI captain, Rohit led India in 56 matches, winning 42 and losing just 12. He captained India to multiple trophies, including the 2018 Asia Cup (as stand-in captain), the 2023 Asia Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy, while also taking India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.

India’s ODI series against Australia is scheduled for October 19, 23, and 25. This will be followed by a five-match T20I series from October 29 to November 8. Rohit and Kohli are also expected to feature in upcoming ODI series against South Africa (Nov-Dec) and New Zealand (January 2026).

The leadership transition underscores India’s strategic long-term planning, with Gill seen as the face of the next generation ahead of the 2027 World Cup to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
