Sheikh Rasheed arrested in May 9 riots case
The accusations against Sheikh Rasheed include planning vandalism and an attack on a sensitive installation on May 9.
RAWALPINDI: In a significant turn of events, former Interior Minister and Awami Muslim League chief, Sheikh Rasheed, was arrested on Tuesday after the cancellation of bail in connection with the May 9 riots case. The arrest followed his appearance before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) for the confirmation of bail in 14 cases registered against him in relation to the May 9 riots.
Rasheed, who had been granted bail in thirteen cases, faced a setback when his bail was rejected in the New Town police station case. Subsequently, he was taken into custody by the police right from the courtroom.
The accusations against Sheikh Rasheed include planning vandalism and an attack on a sensitive installation on May 9, which occurred following the arrest of the former prime minister. The politician, undeterred by his arrest, declared on Monday his determination to contest the upcoming election even if from behind bars.
It’s worth noting that Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, in the past, condemned the May 9 riots and described Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief as ‘stubborn’. Speaking to a private news channel, the former interior minister revealed that he had been on a ‘Chilla’—an apparent reference to spending time underground—for the last 40 days.

During this reflective period, Sheikh Rasheed expressed that no harm was caused, emphasizing the opportunity it provided for contemplation. His arrest comes as a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the May 9 riots, adding a new chapter to the political landscape as the former minister announces his intent to campaign for the upcoming elections from his jail cell.
