Serbia Officially Confirms It Owns Advanced Chinese Supersonic Missiles

Serbia Confirms Possession of Chinese Supersonic Missiles Amid Regional Concerns

Serbia’s president – (Web Desk) – Serbia’s president confirmed on Thursday that the country has Chinese supersonic cruise missiles. This came after photos of the weapons on Serbian fighter jets appeared online.

The images, which spread on social media and defense blogs earlier this week, show missiles believed to be Chinese CM-400AKG cruise missiles mounted on Serbia’s Russian-made MiG-29 planes.

“We have things we do not show,” President Aleksandar Vucic told Serbia’s national broadcaster. He added, “We have a significant number of these missiles, and we will get even more.”

He did not give more details but said the missiles are “very expensive” and “very effective.” Experts say these missiles are likely the export version of China’s YJ-12 and can travel near hypersonic speed.

Serbia, which is an EU candidate, is not part of NATO. It has spent heavily on its military to maintain neutrality. Its latest known purchase was 12 French Rafale jets, costing about 2.7 billion euros ($3.1 billion).

Belgrade also maintains close ties with Moscow, from which it has previously purchased weapons.

In a region torn apart by war in the 1990s, images of the Serbian jet armed with the new missiles drew attention from its former Yugoslav neighbours.

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said he would warn NATO about “such weaponry, which is new in the arsenal of the Serbian army”.

Vucic said his country has good relations with the Western military alliance and “will do everything” to maintain them.

“Everything we do is to defend our country,” Vucic added.
