Saudi Arabia to Experience Extreme Cold Weather and Snowfall in Northern Regions

RIYADH: The National Center of Meteorology (NMC) in Saudi Arabia has issued a forecast predicting that several regions of the kingdom will experience a significant cold wave in the coming days. The cold weather is expected to impact a wide range of cities, including Madinah, Tabuk, Al-Jouf, and parts of the Northern Borders.

According to the NMC, the current mid-winter school break will see temperatures drop across various parts of the country, with the northern regions of Tabuk, Al-Jouf, and Northern Borders particularly affected. In addition to the cold weather, snow is expected to fall in these areas, further intensifying the winter chill.

The weather center has also warned of moderate to severe rainfall and dust-raising winds in regions including Makkah, Madinah, Al-Jouf, Northern Borders, Hail, Al-Qassim, Riyadh, Eastern Province, and Al-Baha. These conditions are anticipated to cause temporary disruptions, particularly in outdoor activities and travel.

The NMC noted that Saudi Arabia’s coldest recorded weather occurred during the 1992 cold wave, which remains the most severe in the country’s history. During that event, temperatures plunged to -9.3°C, with an average of -4.4°C sustained over seven days at the NMC’s Hail station.

The current cold wave is expected to concentrate on the Hail and Al-Qurayyat stations, where historically the lowest temperatures for January have been recorded between 1985 and 2023.

Citizens have been advised to take necessary precautions against the extreme cold and be aware of potential disruptions caused by heavy rains and winds. The NMC continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as needed.
