Updated Photography Rules and Visa Extensions Aim to Improve Pilgrim Experience

Saudia-As the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Islam’s most revered site, welcomes a growing number of Muslims from around the world for the Umrah pilgrimage, authorities are emphasizing the importance of adhering to guidelines on photography.

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has issued reminders to worshippers about the rules concerning the taking of photos and videos. As the Umrah season progresses, with its continuous availability throughout the year, there is a significant influx of pilgrims eager to capture their spiritual journey at this sacred location, which houses the Holy Kaaba. Pilgrims often wish to document their experiences to create lasting memories of their visit.

To maintain order and respect for the sacredness of the environment, the ministry has outlined specific instructions for those intending to take photographs. Worshippers are encouraged to take photos swiftly and avoid causing any disruptions to others. It is advised that pilgrims refrain from photographing individuals engaged in prayer or other worshippers without their explicit consent. Furthermore, they should not linger excessively while taking pictures to ensure that the flow of people moving around the mosque remains smooth and uninterrupted.

The Umrah season, which began in late June following the annual Hajj pilgrimage, continues to attract a substantial number of pilgrims. Last year, approximately 13.5 million individuals performed Umrah, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has set an ambitious goal of hosting 15 million pilgrims in the upcoming year. The influx of visitors underscores the significance of adhering to the established guidelines to ensure a respectful and orderly environment for all.

In recent months, Saudi Arabia has introduced several measures to facilitate and enhance the Umrah experience for pilgrims. One notable change is the extension of the Umrah visa from 30 days to 90 days. This extension allows pilgrims greater flexibility, as they can now enter Saudi Arabia through various land, air, and sea entry points, and depart from any airport within the country. Additionally, women pilgrims are no longer required to be accompanied by male guardians, further simplifying the pilgrimage process.

The updated visa policies also accommodate Muslims traveling on different types of visas. Those holding personal, visit, or tourism visas are now eligible to perform Umrah. To visit Al Rawda Al Sharifa, the resting place of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) located at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, pilgrims must obtain an e-appointment. This system helps manage the number of visitors and ensures that their visit is well-organized and respectful.
