Saudi Air Defences Foil Drone Attack from Iraq
No Iran-backed group in Iraq has claimed responsibility for the drone launches.
Riyadh: (Web Desk) – Saudi Arabia‘s Ministry of Defence announced on Monday that its air defence forces intercepted and destroyed several drones allegedly launched by Iran-backed armed groups from Iraqi territory targeting petroleum facilities in the Kingdom.
According to an official statement, the drones were aimed at strategic locations in eastern Saudi Arabia and the capital, Riyadh. The ministry described the attacks as “terrorist attempts” carried out by Iranian-backed militias operating from Iraq.
The incident comes despite a temporary pause in hostilities between the United States and Iran since Saturday, following nearly two weeks of military exchanges between the two countries.
Saudi Arabia urged the Iraqi government to prevent its territory from being used to launch attacks against neighboring states, calling on Baghdad to take all necessary measures to stop such aggression.
No Iran-backed group in Iraq has claimed responsibility for the drone launches. The latest development also follows recent cross-border strikes between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement, which has announced a naval blockade on Saudi ports.
The situation underscores continuing regional tensions despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce conflict in the Middle East.
