Russia Offers Mediation to Ease Tensions Between Pakistan and Afghanistan

Zakharova stated that diplomatic efforts could help ensure lasting peace.

MOSCOW: Russia has offered to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan in an effort to reduce rising tensions between the two neighboring countries.

The offer comes shortly after Iran also expressed willingness to mediate. During a press briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that stability in the region is a top priority for Russia as well as the international community.

She emphasized that both Pakistan and Afghanistan are important partners, and the ongoing border tensions pose a threat to regional security. Zakharova stated that diplomatic efforts could help ensure lasting peace.

Calling negotiations the only sustainable path to resolving conflicts, the spokesperson urged both countries to show restraint and settle their differences through dialogue.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also advised Pakistan and Afghanistan to avoid actions that could escalate tensions and instead work toward peaceful solutions.

It is noteworthy that just days earlier, Iran had also offered to mediate between the two nations. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, during separate phone calls with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, said that Iran was ready to extend all possible support for reconciliation.
