Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz Lead Spain’s Davis Cup Team
Spain Aims for First Davis Cup Victory Since 2019, With Italian Star Jannik Sinner Joining the Final Eight
BARCELONA– Spain has named 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal and rising star Carlos Alcaraz in their five-man squad for the Davis Cup, while Italy’s world number one, Jannik Sinner, is also set to compete in the final eight in Malaga.
Nadal, 38, has been dealing with injury and fitness issues, missing the US Open and Laver Cup in recent months, and has only participated in one of the last seven Grand Slams.
French Open and Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz will be Spain’s key player as they aim to win the prestigious tournament, known as the “World Cup of tennis,” for the first time since 2019. Their campaign begins with a match against the Netherlands.
Alcaraz was instrumental in Team Europe’s Laver Cup victory over Team World last weekend in Berlin.
US Open and Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner will be a crucial part of Italy’s squad for the finals, which begin on November 19.
The 23-year-old was vital to Italy’s triumph last year, defeating Serbian legend Novak Djokovic twice in one day—once in singles and then again in doubles—in the semi-finals.
Italy, who will face Argentina in the quarter-finals, overcame Australia in the 2023 final to win the Davis Cup for the first time since 1976.
