Punjab Removes University Title From Six Historic Educational Institutions
Educationists Raise Concerns Over Punjab Decision To Drop University Titles
LAHORE: (News Desk) – The Punjab government has decided to remove the word “University” from the names of six historic educational institutions, a move that has sparked concerns among educationists over their academic standing, international reputation and recognition.
According to an official notification issued on October 23, 2026, under the Public Sector Universities (Amendment) Act, 2026, the institutions will revert to their former college names.
The decision affects Government College Lahore, previously known as Government College University Lahore; Government College Faisalabad; Government College for Women Faisalabad; Government College for Women Sialkot; Government Sadiq College Bahawalpur; and Lahore College for Women, formerly Lahore College for Women University.
The notification also covers Government College University Faisalabad and Government College Women University Faisalabad, whose names will be changed under the new arrangement.
However, the institutions’ existing powers and responsibilities concerning higher education will remain intact despite the change in nomenclature.
The decision has prompted concerns among educationists, who believe dropping the university title could affect the institutions’ established international identities, research profiles and academic collaborations.
They have also raised questions about the verification of degrees awarded to millions of graduates under the previous university names, warning that the change could create complications for former students.
Educationists have urged the provincial government to thoroughly assess the academic, administrative and international implications before proceeding with the implementation of the decision.
