Punjab Government Eyes Expanded Laptop Program for Students

LAHORE (Web Desk) – The Punjab government has initiated plans to expand the Chief Minister’s Laptop Scheme to meet rising student demand. Officials are currently reviewing two proposals aimed at increasing the number of laptops distributed to university and college students.

Under the first proposal, the scheme would see a 50 percent expansion, increasing the total cost to approximately Rs 40 billion and benefiting around 165,000 students. The second proposal envisions a 100 percent increase, effectively doubling the program to reach 220,000 students, with an estimated cost of Rs 54 billion.

Since its launch, more than 143,000 students have applied for the program, and over 35,000 have already received laptops. The scheme’s initial phase cost Rs 15 billion, while the total expenditure so far has reached Rs 27 billion.

The Higher Education Department has also extended the application deadline for Phase 2, allowing students to submit their online applications until March 20. Officials emphasized that submissions will be accepted exclusively through the online portal.
