Punjab Delays AI Subject Rollout Over Infrastructure Shortfalls

LAHORE: (Staff Reporter) – The Punjab government has delayed the official rollout of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a subject in government primary schools due to the shortage of computer and AI laboratory facilities.

According to sources, the Punjab Education Curriculum Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA) has approved introducing AI education for students from Grade 1 to Grade 5, with plans to launch the subject in the upcoming academic year.

However, the absence of computer labs in most government primary schools has complicated the implementation process, preventing authorities from issuing the formal notification.

The delay may also affect the preparation and printing of AI textbooks, as the curriculum cannot move forward until official approval is announced.

To overcome infrastructure challenges, education officials are considering introducing AI concepts as chapters within existing subjects instead of launching a separate AI subject at the primary level.

The proposal is aimed at familiarizing students with basic AI concepts while avoiding the significant costs associated with establishing dedicated computer and AI laboratories in thousands of schools across the province.

Officials said introducing AI as a standalone subject would require substantial investment in computer labs and digital infrastructure, contributing to the current delay.

PECTAA officials confirmed that the matter is still under review and said the formal notification regarding the AI curriculum will be issued once all implementation details are finalized.

The initiative is part of the Punjab government’s broader efforts to equip students with modern technological skills while addressing infrastructure limitations in the public education system.
