Punjab forms vigilance teams to improve blood transfusion safety

LAHORE: (Web Desk) – Punjab is taking significant steps to ensure safer blood transfusions by increasing the monitoring of blood banks across the province. Special vigilance teams will be established to enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) effectively.

The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Punjab Minister of Specialized Health, Khawaja Salman Rafique, on Thursday.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Rafique highlighted that the provincial government is committed to removing barriers in the treatment of Thalassemia patients. “So far, 430,669 individuals have been screened, and 390,080 of them have received treatment,” he said.

The minister also emphasized that screening efforts will be further expanded to detect and manage Thalassemia cases more effectively.

The meeting was attended by Parliamentary Secretary Syed Ziaullah Shah, Director of the Institute of Blood Transfusion Services Hospital Dr. Farhan, In-charge of the Provincial Thalassemia Programme Dr. Masooma, and Dr. Rabia from the Punjab Blood Transfusion Authority.
