PTI Withdraws from Special Committee on Chief Justice Appointment
Islamabad-(Mudassar Iqbal): In a late-night meeting in Islamabad, the political committee of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) decided to fully withdraw from today’s session of the parliamentary special committee tasked with selecting the new Chief Justice of Pakistan.
PTI leader Sheikh Waqas Akram confirmed that no PTI members would attend the meeting, reaffirming the party’s decision to avoid participating in the proceedings.
The PTI also announced plans to take strict disciplinary action against its members who defied party policy by voting in favor of the 26th constitutional amendment in parliament. The political committee approved the cancellation of memberships for those members, with show-cause notices set to be issued to others who have been out of contact with the party. These notices will ask members to explain their position on cutting ties with the PTI, their relationships with government members, and other issues.
The future standing of these members within the party will depend on their responses to the notices, with the political committee set to make final decisions. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar emphasized that no party members would attend the parliamentary special committee session, reaffirming the committee’s decisions as binding for all members.
The newly formed 12-member special parliamentary committee is scheduled to meet today to finalize the appointment of the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. The meeting, set for 4 p.m., will consider the names of the three most senior judges of the Supreme Court, with the decision requiring a two-thirds majority before being forwarded to the prime minister for approval.

The committee is composed of members from various political parties, including four from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), three from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and three representing both the PTI and the Sunni Ittehad Council. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) each have one representative on the panel.
Committee members hail from both houses of parliament, comprising four senators and eight National Assembly members. Among the PML-N representatives are Azam Nazir Tarar, Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, and Shaista Parvaiz Malik, while PPP’s members include Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Farooq H. Naik, and Naveed Qamar.

The prime minister will then send the nominee to the president for formal confirmation. Once the president gives his consent, an official notification will be issued, and the new Chief Justice of Pakistan will assume office.
