PTI Approaches Supreme Court to Enforce Reserved Seats Ruling and Reject Election Commission's Clarification Plea

On Monday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) petitioned the Supreme Court to enforce its recent ruling and reject the Election Commission’s request for clarification regarding reserved seats.

The petition, filed by Uzair Bhandari on behalf of PTI, also seeks an order for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to validate the affiliation certificates of independent members and act on the court’s brief decision from July 12.

This follows the Supreme Court’s July 11 decision, which overturned previous rulings by the Peshawar High Court and the election commission, affirming PTI’s eligibility for reserved seats related to the Sunni Ittehad Council. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa led the 13-member court in an 8-5 majority verdict, broadcast live, which acknowledged PTI’s status as a legitimate political party. The court ruled that losing an election symbol does not disqualify a party from participating in elections. The ECP had submitted data on 80 candidates for review.
