Islamabad: (Staff Reporter) President Arif Alvi announced the date for the elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. As per the Section 57(1) of the Elections Act, 2017, Mr Alvi announced the elections on April 9 in both the provinces.

According to the source, President Arif Alvi took a dig at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), saying, “The electoral watchdog is reluctant to fulfill its responsibility to hold the elections as per the constitution.”

Furthermore he believed it was his responsibility to announce the date for elections so as not to violate the constitution. Mr. Alvi urged the electoral watchdog to carry on the election program as per Section 57(2) of the Elections Act. The constitution made it illegitimate to postpone elections for more than 90 days, he added.
