Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairperson and former president Asif Ali Zardari is confident that his party will form the next government in the country.
Speaking to the media after an appearance before an accountability court in Islamabad on Thursday, Zardari said the “next turn” to form a government in the country will be of the PPP.
Responding to a question about the duration of the ongoing accountability process in the country, Zardari said, “It will continue till the country’s economy does not come down further.”
Prime Minister Imran Khan won power in 2018, vowing to root out corruption among what he cast as a venal political elite and views the probes into veteran politicians – including jailed former premier Nawaz Sharif and Zardari – as long overdue.
In 2019, Zardari was arrested on corruption charges in a major blow to the PPP.
“Our stance is that the current government is incompetent,” said the PPP leader when asked to comment over the issue of the appointment of the new Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
“Five drafts were created at the extension of the term of the chief of army staff. I do not know if the decision will change or remain the same,” he said.
Zardari also doubted if the premier could handle the situation around it, as according to him, “[Prime Minister] Imran Khan is barely handling his own politicians.”
Meanwhile, An Islamabad accountability court rejected the plea filed by the former president Asif Ali Zardari seeking his acquittal in the Rs8.3 billion suspicious transaction case.
The verdict on Zardari’s plea was reserved earlier in the day by the court.
The PPP co-chairman had moved the acquittal plea on the basis of the recent amendments made to the country’s accountability law.
