PMD to Install New Radars and Weather Stations Across Pakistan
300 Weather Stations to Enhance Forecasting Nationwide
Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) is set to enhance its weather forecasting and emergency response capabilities by acquiring advanced equipment. This initiative includes the installation of 300 new weather stations, along with five fixed surveillance radars and three portable radars. Funded by the World Bank, the project is expected to be completed within three years.
According to the Director General of the PMD, Sahibzad Khan, the total cost for modernizing meteorological equipment across various cities in Pakistan will be $500 million.

Khan outlined the plans for the installation of new radars, specifying that two will be positioned in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, located in Cherat and Dera Ismail Khan. An additional two radars will be placed in Quetta and Gwadar, and one will be set up in Lahore. Karachi will continue to benefit from its existing state-of-the-art radar station.
The project also includes the deployment of 300 automatic weather stations across the country. These will be distributed as follows: 105 in Balochistan, 85 in rural Sindh (including Karachi), 75 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 35 in Punjab.
