PMD Predicts Below-Normal Rainfall for Northern Pakistan
The Meteorological Department has issued its monthly forecast for October, predicting near-normal rainfall coupled with slightly higher-than-average temperatures. This weather pattern is expected to increase the likelihood of smog in urban areas across the country.
Meanwhile, areas such as Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and certain parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are forecasted to receive slightly less rainfall than usual.
Nationwide, temperatures are predicted to be slightly higher, especially in Gilgit-Baltistan and western Balochistan. These warm and humid conditions could lead to an increase in dengue larvae breeding, raising public health concerns.
The rising temperatures in upper glaciated regions also pose a significant risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in vulnerable areas.
The forecast also mentions isolated showers accompanied by windstorms and hail, which could potentially disrupt the harvesting of Kharif crops.
Additionally, worsening air quality has heightened the risk of smog formation in the plains. The combination of near-normal rainfall and above-average temperatures is expected to intensify smog conditions in urban centers.

On the upside, near-normal rainfall is anticipated to provide adequate water for standing crops and vegetables, promoting healthy growth and maintaining good yield throughout the month.
