Petroleum Levy Protest: JI to Set Up 25 Karachi Camps
Jamaat-e-Islami vows daily demonstrations across Karachi as anger grows over petrol levy and prolonged load-shedding
Karachi – (Staff Reporter/Web Desk) – The petroleum levy protest in Karachi is set to grow bigger from Saturday, as Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) announced plans to set up more than 25 camps across the city. The move is part of the party’s ongoing campaign against rising fuel taxes and the crippling power outages hitting local households.
The announcement came just days after JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman revealed that the party had put its planned march toward Islamabad on hold. He said JI would stay put in Multan until a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif takes place.
Hafiz Naeem made it clear that the sit-in in Multan is not ending anytime soon. He said the protest movement will carry on until the government agrees to sit down and talk.
Speaking to reporters in Karachi, JI’s city chief Munem Zafar said sit-ins against the petroleum levy and heavy taxation are already spreading across the country. He said the party wants the levy removed completely.
Zafar also turned his attention to K-Electric, accusing the power company of pushing Karachi residents through as much as 18 hours of load-shedding a day. He called it unfair punishment for everyone, even those who pay their bills on time.
According to Zafar, only a small number of consumers are actually behind on payments. He argued that K-Electric should go after those specific defaulters instead of cutting power to the whole city.
He also called on the federal government to step in and put an end to the ongoing outages in Karachi.
To keep the pressure on, JI plans to widen its street presence starting tomorrow. Zafar confirmed that more than 25 protest camps will pop up across different parts of Karachi.
He appealed to residents to come out and join the demonstrations. The party wants strong public turnout to show how deeply the fuel levy and power crisis are affecting ordinary people.
This latest push is another chapter in JI’s larger nationwide protest drive. The party has been targeting both the petroleum levy and what it calls excessive taxation on the working class.
For now, all eyes are on Karachi, where the new wave of camps could turn into one of the city’s biggest organized protest efforts this year
