Pakistan’s Role in US Iran Talks 2026: Peace in Sight

How Pakistan's Role in US Iran Talks 2026 Is Shaping a Historic Peace Deal Between Washington and Tehran

Islamabad – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – Pakistan is playing a key role in US Iran talks 2026. The Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said on Thursday that Islamabad is hopeful a deal between the US and Iran will happen very soon. He was speaking at his weekly press briefing.

Andrabi said Pakistan will welcome any peace settlement between the two countries. He added that if the agreement is signed in Pakistan, it would be a great honour for the nation.

Pakistan Backs Peace Between Washington and Tehran

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has already welcomed the pause in “Project Freedom.” This was a US operation launched to keep the Strait of Hormuz open for navigation.

PM Sharif said he hopes the current positive momentum leads to a lasting peace deal. He wants a settlement that brings long-term stability to the region and beyond.

Ishaq Dar Stays in Active Contact With All Sides

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been very busy behind the scenes. He has been in regular contact with his counterparts from both the US and Iran throughout the past week.

Dar is working hard to push for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. Pakistan continues to act as a trusted go-between for both sides.

How the Conflict Started

The current round of hostilities began on February 28, 2026. That is when the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran.

Since then, the two sides have been in a tense standoff. However, things began to calm down after a ceasefire was agreed on April 8, 2026. That ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan — a major diplomatic achievement.

Historic Direct Talks Held in Islamabad

Following the ceasefire, the first-ever direct talks between the US and Iran took place in Islamabad. The talks were held on April 11 and 12, 2026.

Pakistan played the role of mediator in those talks. Although no deal was reached, the talks did not break down either. That was seen as a positive sign by diplomats on all sides.

Fresh Hope for a Deal in 2026

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said he had “very good talks” with Iran in the past 24 hours. This gave fresh hope that a deal could be close.

Tehran said it is reviewing a new proposal from Washington. Iran also confirmed that its response will be sent to the US through Islamabad. This again highlights Pakistan’s central role in the peace process.

US media outlet Axios reported that both sides are close to signing a one-page memorandum of understanding. This document would end the war and set the stage for deeper nuclear negotiations.

Key Issues Still on the Table

A few major issues still need to be resolved before a final deal is signed.

The US wants free and open navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Washington is also demanding long-term limits on Iran’s nuclear programme. This includes restrictions on uranium enrichment and guarantees against building nuclear weapons.

Both sides are still working through these points. But the overall mood is far more positive than it was just weeks ago.

Pakistanis Detained in Cambodia Return Home

In other news from the same briefing, Andrabi also spoke about 54 Pakistani nationals who were detained in Cambodia. They were arrested during a raid on a scam operation compound.

He said emergency travel documents were quickly issued to all detained individuals. Thanks to efforts by the Pakistani embassy, Cambodian authorities allowed all 54 people to return home.

As of Thursday, 49 people had already returned to Pakistan. The remaining individuals are being processed and are expected to return very soon.
