Pakistani Deaths at Sea Rise, Agents Hide the Truth

Government Must Provide Safe and Legal Migration Routes for Citizens

By (Abdul Ghaffar Khan)
In the past few months, nearly 960 Pakistani citizens have died at sea off the coast of Libya. This tragic situation highlights that illegal migration is extremely dangerous and a major cause of human loss. Young people, laborers, and educated individuals often take perilous routes in search of a better life, while human traffickers exploit this situation for profit.

Pakistani migration agents charge hefty fees but place people on unsafe and overloaded boats. Overcrowding causes accidents and drowning incidents. Agents promise safe passage to Italy or Europe, but fail to provide the facilities and safety they claim.

Illegal migration is not only a threat to human life; it also reflects a broader social and economic crisis. Unemployment, poverty, limited educational opportunities, and an uncertain future push young people toward risky routes. Traffickers’ activities in such conditions become even more deadly.

The government must make legal and safe migration pathways accessible. Visa processes and legal documentation should be fast, transparent, and affordable, enabling young people and laborers to travel safely. Public awareness campaigns are essential to educate citizens about the dangers of illegal migration and prevent unnecessary risks.

Strict measures against human trafficking must be implemented. Networks of agents and traffickers should be dismantled, perpetrators arrested, and citizens warned of the risks. Cooperation with European countries can reduce illegal migration and save lives.

Illegal migration also affects the country’s economy and social structure. Youth leaving the country reduces national development potential. The government should increase employment opportunities, provide education and training, and ensure better prospects within Pakistan.

Legal frameworks alone are not enough. There is an urgent need to create safe, legal, and accessible migration pathways. Timely action can prevent loss of lives and provide the youth with better life and growth opportunities.

The time has come for the government, media, and social institutions to work together, raise awareness, and provide safe, legal migration routes. Pakistani lives must be protected, and youth guided on the path of sustainable development.
