Pakistan Warns UN of India’s Aggressive Naval Expansion, Urges Maritime Cooperation and Equity
Pakistan Slams India’s Naval Buildup and Exclusionary Tactics at UN, Reaffirms Commitment to Maritime Peace
NEW YORK: At a UN Security Council debate on “Strengthening Maritime Security,” Pakistan strongly criticized India’s growing naval assertiveness and efforts to dominate key waterways in the region. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, warned against “unchecked regional hegemony” and rejected actions that undermine maritime law or exclude neighboring states from key security frameworks.
Highlighting India’s naval buildup and exclusionary tactics in forums like the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), Ambassador Asim accused New Delhi of weaponizing shared natural resources and pursuing unilateral outcomes to Pakistan’s detriment. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to maritime peace, pointing to its active participation in international patrols, security collaborations, and climate resilience efforts.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also stressed the global importance of ocean security, saying that maritime stability is foundational to broader international peace. Ambassador Asim concluded by calling for multilateralism and cooperation to ensure oceans remain open, peaceful, and beneficial for all.
