ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is committed to fostering equal and respectful relations with the United States, while also maintaining strong ties with European countries, according to Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch. During her weekly briefing in Islamabad, Baloch emphasized that Pakistan seeks good relations with the US based on equality and mutual respect, stressing both nations’ commitment to non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.
Baloch declined to comment on recent remarks made by an individual in the US, stating that such statements are not conducive to bilateral relations. She reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to upholding international human rights standards and protecting its citizens, particularly in response to concerns over the Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) Plus status.
Addressing the ongoing partnership with the European Union and the US, Baloch assured that Pakistan would continue to strengthen its relations with both, emphasizing Pakistan’s adherence to its human rights commitments. She also highlighted the country’s judicial system, noting that Pakistan has a robust process for reviewing decisions in higher courts to ensure rule of law and fairness.
In response to recent concerns from the US, UK, and EU about the use of military courts for civilian trials related to the May 9, 2023 riots, Baloch stated that Pakistan’s legal framework is strong enough to handle such matters independently. These concerns stem from worries about transparency, fairness, and judicial independence in military tribunals. The US has called for ensuring fair trials for civilians as guaranteed by Pakistan’s constitution, while the UK and EU have voiced concerns over the lack of independent scrutiny in military trials.
