ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Oman have taken a big step toward closer ties. The Pakistan Oman agreements, six in total, were exchanged on Wednesday during a visit by the Omani foreign minister.

The documents include formal agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs). They aim to build stronger cooperation in several important areas.

Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al Busaidi came to Pakistan to co-chair the 8th session of the Pakistan-Oman Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC). Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received him and his delegation.

The signing took place during the JMC session. The prime minister watched the process in person, according to statements from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Foreign Ministry.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Sayyid Badr signed three documents. The first records the minutes of the eighth JMC session.

The second is a visa exemption agreement. It covers holders of diplomatic, special, official and service passports from both countries.

The third is an MoU on records and archives. It opens the door to sharing experience in preserving national documents.

Three more MoUs were signed by the relevant federal ministers. They cover information and broadcasting, information technology and telecommunications, and news exchange and media cooperation.

Officials say these steps will widen cooperation between the two countries. They also hope the agreements will create new ways for both sides to work together.

During the meeting, Shehbaz Sharif warmly welcomed the Omani guest. He spoke about the shared faith, culture, history and geography that connect the two nations.

He also pointed to the long history of people-to-people contact. In his words, Oman is a brotherly country and an important maritime neighbour.

The prime minister called Oman a valuable partner in a region of strategic importance. He said the successful JMC session gives a strong base for deeper engagement.

Shehbaz Sharif also noted that Pakistan and Oman see eye to eye on many regional and global issues. He praised Muscat for its steady focus on dialogue and diplomacy to settle disputes.

Sayyid Badr thanked the Pakistani government for the warm hospitality. He said the successful session would clear the way for more cooperation across many sectors, to the benefit of both countries.

The Omani foreign minister also thanked Pakistan for its continued diplomatic efforts. He said these efforts help ease tensions and promote peaceful solutions to regional problems.

Ishaq Dar is co-chairing the eighth JMC session with his Omani counterpart. The commission is the main platform where both sides review their ties and plan future work.

With these Pakistan Oman agreements now in place, attention turns to putting them into action. Both sides hope the new links will bring real benefits to their people.
